Essential oils are everywhere these days. They’re being used to alleviate illness, clean our homes, and even enhance the nutritional benefits of our food! However, many people are mystified by the fragrant oils…. What are they? Are they safe? And do they actually work?
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are the essence of a plant. They are concentrated, highly potent chemical compounds that give the plant its fragrance. These chemical compounds protect the plant from less-than-ideal environmental conditions such as toxins, pollution, and cellular distress.
Essential oils can be used in three ways: Topically, internally, and aromatically. How we choose to use the essential oil depends on the oil we are using and the benefit we are trying to achieve. Always read the directions on the essential oil’s label and seek the guidance of a healthcare professional for specific concerns.
Generally, essential oils that can be applied topically (directly to the skin) are simply massaged into the targeted areas. Because essential oils are so potent, they may need to be added to a carrier oil, such as coconut or jojoba oil.
Some oils can be ingested. First, make sure the oil is safe for internal use. If it is, a few drops can be added to a glass of water, taken under the tongue, or simply in a veggie capsule.
A favorite way of using many essential oils is aromatically. Essential oils can be enjoyed by using a special diffuser, as a personal fragrance, or even applying a drop to the hands and breathing in the fragrance. The aromatic use of essential oils is employed in practices such as aromatherapy.
The science behind essential oils.
Oils have traditionally been used in cultural, medical, and spiritual practices all over the world! Oils have been used for thousands of years for aromatherapy, health and wellness, beauty and personal care, and more!
Essential oils work through creating chemical interactions with our cells. There have been more studies done testing the efficacy of essential oils in the past ten years than in the previous 500 years combined! Guided by tradition and scientific research, we are learning how to effectively and safely use essential oils to provide natural solutions to better care for our bodies, homes, and families.
Ethical considerations for essential oils.
With so many essential oils on the market, which ones are safe and effective? Unfortunately, essential oils are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States. This means when many people try essential oils, they don’t really know what is in the bottle they are getting. Without regulation, it is entirely likely that people are getting a bottle of olive oil with a few drops of fragrance added to make it seem like a true essential oil. Is it any wonder there are people who say things like, “Yeah, I tried essential oils, but they didn’t work for me.”?
In addition to concerns about the quality of the oils we are purchasing is the ethics of the company we are purchasing from. How does this company do business? How do they treat the farmers and communities from which the oils come? What about the land? Is the company we purchase our essential oils from environmentally responsible?
I choose to work with doTERRA’s essential oils because of their commitment to science, environmental justice, and the communities from which the oils come. Through CPTG Certified Pure Tested Grade standards, every doTERRA oil is tested for purity. If you are like me and your concerned not only with the quality of the essential oil you are purchasing, but also the impact it has on the environment and the people who work so hard to bring us these amazing plants, I encourage you to check out doTERRA as well.
